Day 6

Hello everyone!

Today was a rest day – just what we all needed! After a leisurely breakfast and team time together, we went off to view India Gate – a memorial to all those who died during the second World War.

The arch was magnificent – although Ella was unconvinced with her initial view of the wrong arch!

A highlight for Tori was getting her photo taken with her Hindi namesake (a courgette!!).

One unique experience was an Indian pipe music rendition of Jingle Bells with which our team dutifully joined in – drawing a crowd of over 100 people and leading to an India-Ireland “dance off” involving team members and an Indian lady.

It is a matter of great delight to all members of the team (but especially Mr Donnelly) that today was Napoleon's first successful outing sightseeing in India!

After a hearty feed in Pizza Hut the team set off for Akshardham Temple – only to find that one taxi driver had insisted that his car returned to the Legend Inn! A quick turn around solved the problem of location, however since no electronic devices are permitted in the complex it was with relief that all 16 team members successfully reunited in the throngs awaiting entry to what is a magnificent monument. At the end of the visit, we were thrilled to witness the most spectacular sound and light display any of us has ever seen (though none of us was really sure what the storyline was!!) Just a reminder, the lack  of photos is due to the no camera rule.

At the half way point of our trip, we thought you might like to read some reflections from each team member of our experience so far.

Teaching Team-

Ella- Everything in India has exceeded all of my expectations, I never expected to feel so emotional! The sightseeing has been so fantastic but I can’t get over the contrast between the sights and the conditions of the slum. The best part so far has been spending time with the children and I’m looking forward to the next 4 days!

Michael- India has exceeded my expectations tenfold, this trip is truly an experience of a lifetime. Personally, I have been struck by the divide between the rich and the poor. For example, the opulence of the Akshardham Temple and the heart-breaking sights of children begging amongst six lanes of traffic.

Johnny- I'm having an amazing time in Delhi. It is definitely the best experience of my life so far. The country is amazing and filled with so many amazing sights and people. The selflessness and happiness of the children of Tigri has made me realise how much we take for granted. The team is pure banter too.

Lyndsey- I can honestly say that the time I have spent in India so far has made me the most content I have been in a long time. I feel so blessed to have such a close-knit team that I have shared so many laughs with and to have met children that have inspired me to understand where true joy comes from! X

Julie- I am absolutely gutted that we are already half way through our India experience- it’s been an emotional rollercoaster. I really love all the children, especially when they call you their best friend, because they make me feel so appreciated; they have a genuine love for us.

Games Team-

Rebecca- Having an incredible time in India!! I've loved my days in Tigri by far the most, especially having Chandni do my hair and nails and having baby Sashi in my arms all morning. The team have somehow gotten even closer and the taxi drives are still as crazy as ever. Thanks for all your comments xx

Cameron- So far my experience of Delhi has been incredible with all the sights, sounds and smells that it has brought. The highlight by far, however, is the kids at Tigri who are always so happy and excited and I truly can’t wait for the next four days with them! The sights in Delhi are unbelievable and I just don’t want this trip to end!

Tori- I am absolutely loving this trip from the close relationship with the adorable children to the extremely loud sing-alongs in the taxi, the delicious Indian food and the giggles that erupt when I tell people my name as it translates to 'courgette' in Hindi. I never want to come home!

Art Team-

Lucy- I feel so humbled and blessed to be part of such an amazing, close team! The sights here in Delhi have truly opened my eyes and shown me that happiness is not from materialism, but through caring for each other and being content with our lives- the children are such an inspiration to us all! Lots of love from Lucy xo

Emma- I love India! The culture here is amazing and the people are so kind, happy and just love everyone. Going to Tigri is my favourite part of the trip- it has really touched me that the children remember our names and even want help me paint. I never want to leave and I know this experience will have a lasting impact on me. x

Media Team-

Molly- Our India trip has already been such a powerful experience for me. One thing I have found truly humbling is the children in Tigri’s appreciation for their education. At home we are often found complaining about homework or exams, whilst here the slum children are so eager to share what they’ve learned, and couldn’t be prouder of the single book they might own.

David- India - what a place!! I have loved being part of this amazing team, in particular the evening meetings and banterful bus journeys. However I have enjoyed my time in the slum the most, in particular, playing cricket, giving hugs and teaching the children English. Can't wait for the next few days!

Sasha- India has been the most incredible experience! Going to Tigri is by far the highlight, the children are always so enthusiastic and excited to learn, play games and do crafts. What has struck me is how selfless they are and I was extremely touched when a little girl gave me a bracelet and refused to take it back. I will cherish these memories forever!

Staff

Lizzie- India is completely indescribable!! I thought I was prepared for the experience but now I'm here I don't think any words or photos can fully explain what it's like - it needs to be seen to be believed! It is such a blessing to be here with a truly fantastic wee team and slum children who are so loving, affectionate and inspirational. A humbling, wonderful experience.

John– It’s so good to be “back home” in Tigri for a third time and reunite with so many friends, especially Akash.  I couldn’t be more proud of our team, who have been amazing – seeing them interact so well with the children reinforces why each one of them is meant to be part of this trip.

Catherine– So proud of everyone on our wonderful team – their dedication, unity, joy and wholehearted enthusiasm for everything that is going on. Getting a hug from Anju in Tigri for the third trip in a row has been a personal highlight for me.

Love from Media Team, Dr D and Mrs L xo
