Hello from Delhi!
It feels like a lifetime ago that we left Ballymena Academy, but really it was only two days! We are sitting in Pizza Hut as we write our first blog entry, enjoying a well-deserved "healthy" meal - after all, we have been travelling for 24 hours!
An energetic start had us singing the whole way down to Dublin and not a wink of sleep was had until our final flight from Dubai to Delhi; although this was down to the fact that we watched 75 hours of movies collectively on our flight entertainment system! The long journey became worthwhile when we stepped out of the airport in Delhi and were met with the hum of noise and smells which we have since affiliated with India.
Our joint bus ride with the team from Armagh Royal School offered us our first eye-opening insight into the bustling streets of Delhi, littered with tuk-tuk drivers and everyone's incessant horn beeping! Never again will we take for granted the tranquil streets of Ballymena.
Running on two hours sleep fuelled by our sheer excitement at finally reaching Delhi, we taxied our way to the Asha Polyclinic where we met Dr. Kiran Martin (founder of ASHA) and many of her staff. Their excitement matched our own as they welcomed us with lots of hugs and extra information about what's to come in the next 10 days. This made us even more eager to head out to the Tigri slum and finally meet the children who we've been waiting to see since last November!
After another round of group photographs, we took to the busy streets again to make our way to Fab India! This is where the girls spent an hour choosing and deliberating over colours and designs of our Indian outfits; this required a lot of parading around the store as we tried to find the perfect outfit to wear to the Taj Mahal tomorrow. Meanwhile the boys spent equally the amount of time choosing their own outfits...
As the end of our first day draws to a close, all of the team were overwhelmed by the kindness and hospitality of everyone we have met so far. We are looking forward to the Taj tomorrow and to hearing your comments.
With much excitement and love, from Sasha, Ella and Michael.
