Day 7

Hi all!

Let us begin by assuring you that not only did we survive the earthquake here in Delhi, but we barely even felt it (much to Mrs Liggat’s disappointment)!

Today we spent another full day at our favourite place - the ASHA Centre in Tigri! It didn’t take us long to get stuck into painting the walls, teaching, making crafts and playing games whilst a group headed out on a lane visit.

Molly, Emma, Lyndsey, Lizzie, Michael and Cameron ventured through the lanes of the Tigri slum, astounded by the array of sights and smells and blown away by the devastating standard of living. Despite this, they were humbled by the immense pride and care each family took with regards to their home. It was amazing to witness how beautifully their houses were presented, regardless of their lack of material wealth and the challenging circumstances that they face. The team felt privileged to witness the incredible impact ASHA has had on numerable slum dwellers; a significant example of this being an old man who had been given a loan by ASHA, which helped transform his life, as he was able to set up a successful business selling food.

After showing off some questionable dance moves in Muskan and Mahak’s house they headed back to the centre where the teaching team (led by Julie) were conducting today’s lesson based on the parts of the body. Numerous choruses of “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” were chanted at a significant volume whilst the kids created life-size paper figures to reinforce what they had learned. Once again, the team were struck by the overwhelming selflessness of the kids as they tried to gift their crafts to us. Some of the children even named their paper people after members of our team!

Possibly the most substantial part of the day was spent painting the incredible murals on the walls of the centre for which Emma and Lucy should be commended. The hard work put in today has really helped keep the team on schedule!

Sasha, Johnny and Mr. Donnelly were invited to take part in an interview for the ASHA society in which they were questioned about themselves, their motivation for being in India and the work they have been doing. Numerous takes and laughs later the video was completed, we await its release with anticipation.

The rest of the day flew by taking hundreds of “selfies” and having a great time with the kids, before spending an evening at the DFL Promenade shopping centre. We enjoyed a hearty meal at TGI Fridays followed by a brief yet prosperous shopping experience, especially for the girls!

As always, our evening consisted of the usual dance routines, laughing and thoughts of the day, giving each member time to reflect on their views and experiences during the trip. We are so excited for our last 3 days and can’t wait to see the children again tomorrow!!

Lots of love from Cameron, Lucy, Michael and Molly xxx

  1. Hi guys, another tremendous blog, it's so good to hear what you have been up to each day, and the detail and photos help us to feel a part of what you are doing. Which is, btw, a tremendous job in bringing joy to these kids and representing yourselves, your parents and the school so well. We are all so proud of you all and are so glad you are having so much fun as well! Our days are reduced to waiting for the blogs to upload, checking the website, refreshing, checking that we are doing it right, then checking again!! You know, us old folk struggle to turn these things on most of the time, never mind check for blogs! (Tried to put a smiley face on but gave up!)
Anyway, enjoy your last 3 days, will be great to see you on Friday. Cameron, Scrufty misses you.
    Love, Tom, Sheena and Stuart

Poor Mr Donnelly in the middle of the videos you sent us Lyndsey ,it is hard to see how the families live yet the pride they have could teach us a lot, looking forward to hearing more of your work with the children

  4. Hello again. Glad you were not affected by the earthquake but as we were told in San Francisco if a quake occurs you can't run, you can't hide so just sit back and enjoy the ride. Very good that you can all relate to the children and from the photos they do seem to be a cute little lot. Keep up the dancing Lucy and Sasha as I await in anticipation. Love Granpa
